Fire Safety at Work: Inail publishes volume on design guidelines

This volume, the result of scientific collaboration between the Institute and the Fire Department, provides an updated overview of the subject after the issuance of the three ministerial decrees in September 2021.

The Ministerial Decree of March 10, 1998 has been the regulatory reference for fire risk assessment in working environments for more than 20 years. The decree introduced innovative aspects, "performance" type directions forfire risk assessment and three "qualitative" levels of risk: high, medium and low. However, as regulations in the field evolved, it was necessary to update the contents with a design methodology based on the performance approach.

Three decrees to simplify regulatory enforcement and facilitate future revisions. The ministerial decrees of Sept. 1, 2021 ("Controls"), Sept. 2, 2021 ("Fire Safety Management") and Sept. 3, 2021 ("Minicode") were issued to address these needs. The choice of three separate decrees is motivated by the complexity of the subject matter and the desire to simplify the reading and application of the regulations. An in-depth volume for designers and technicians is available on theInail website.

The collaboration between Inail and the Fire Department to spread the culture of fire prevention. The publication was edited by Inail and the National Fire Department as part of a collaborative project between the two institutions to spread the culture of fire safety. A number of studies and monographic essays on the Fire Prevention Code have been produced in the past in collaboration with the National Council of Engineers and the Faculty of Civil and Industrial Engineering at Sapienza University of Rome and are available on the Institute's portal.

The publication offers regulatory guidance and practical case studies. The book, updated to the 2021 decrees, contains regulatory and practical guidance for fire risk assessment and analyzes two specific case studies: one related to a low-risk workplace, such as a law firm located in a residential building, and the other to a non-low risk, represented by a store displaying and selling furniture furnishings.
