The volume, the result of scientific collaboration between the Institute and the Fire Brigade Corps, provides an updated overview of the topic following the issuance of the three ministerial decrees of September 2021.
The ministerial decree of 10 March 1998 was the regulatory reference for assessing fire risks in workplaces for over 20 years. The decree introduced innovative aspects, “performance”-based indications for the assessment of fire risk, and three “qualitative” risk levels: high, medium, and low. However, as regulations in the sector evolved, it was necessary to update the contents with a design methodology based on a performance-based approach.
Three decrees to simplify regulatory application and facilitate future revisions. The ministerial decrees of 1 September 2021 (“Controls”), 2 September 2021 (“Fire Safety Management”) and 3 September 2021 (“Minicode”) were issued to respond to these needs. The choice of three separate decrees is motivated by the complexity of the topic and the desire to simplify the reading and application of the rules. An in-depth volume for designers and technicians is available on the INAIL website.
Collaboration between INAIL and the Fire Brigade to spread the culture of fire prevention. The publication was edited by INAIL and the National Fire Brigade, as part of a collaborative project between the two institutions to spread the culture of fire safety. Several studies and monographic essays on the Fire Prevention Code have been produced in the past in collaboration with the National Council of Engineers and the Faculty of Civil and Industrial Engineering at Sapienza University of Rome and are available on the Institute’s portal.
The publication offers regulatory guidance and practical case studies. The volume, updated to reflect the 2021 decrees, contains regulatory and practical guidance for assessing fire risks and analyzes two specific case studies: one involving a low-risk workplace, such as a law firm located in a residential building, and the other involving a non-low-risk workplace, represented by a furniture showroom and salesroom.
